Cynthia Weiss

From the beginning, nature has been a major influence to Cynthia Smith Weiss. She was born in southern New Hampshire and raised on a dairy farm, and it is from this upbringing, amid grand New England vistas, that her love of nature was created. Consequently, landscapes are a focal point for all of her painting, printmaking and book arts. All of her work refers to the landscape, whether whole scenes or isolated elements, from the grandest vistas to the simplest tree. She spends many hours, days and weeks immersed in and becoming attuned to the spirit of a place by living, drawing, sketching, photographing and painting scenes of her surroundings. “I am living in the landscape.” Says Weiss. “Images become a part of my seeing and knowing.” Her paintings portray wide-open vistas and a sense of space and distance. Valleys surrounded by mountains near and distant that seems to go on forever with luminous skies giving atmosphere to the whole.
